International defender exits Aberdeen as boss Jimmy Thelin’s summer revamp steps up.

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin’s summer roster makeover continues with the departure of an international defender from Pittodrie.
James McGarry, a New Zealand international left-back, will leave Aberdeen to join the Brisbane Roar. The 27-year-old has agreed to a three-year contract and will join the Australian A-League team on July 1. McGarry had a year left on his Aberdeen contract and was loaned out to Greek club Kallithea in January. The full-back joined Aberdeen in summer 2023 after winning the A-League title with Central Coast Mariners.
McGarry made 28 appearances for Aberdeen, scoring once. Aberdeen manager Thelin commended McGarry for his professionalism and believes the full-back will thrive in his return to the Australian A-League. Thelin stated, “A combination of disappointing injuries and Jack’s (MacKenzie) form made life difficult for James, but I have never had any concerns about his attitude or professionalism. “Sometimes things don’t go as planned when a player makes a move, and I believe that is the case here. “He has extensive expertise in the A-League.
“And with a fresh start, I am confident he will perform well there. “He leaves with our thanks and best wishes for his future career.” McGarry made his debut for Aberdeen in the Europa League play-offs against Hacken in Sweden.
McGarry determined to make impact
He came off the bench in the 70th minute as the Dons rallied from 2-0 down to draw 2-2. However, McGarry was unable to consistently dethrone Jack MacKenzie as the starting left-back. MacKenzie has also left Aberdeen when his contract expired, and is expected to join Plymouth Argyle.
Aberdeen manager Thelin has recruited left-back Emmanual Gyamfi on a four-year contract from FC Schalke 04 to fill the vacuum left by the departures of McGarry and MacKenzie. McGarry is determined to make an instant effect when he returns to Australia. He stated, “I’m pleased to join Brisbane Roar and represent the supporters every week. “Given my experience in the A-League, I’m convinced that I can hit the ground running and deliver the level of football that the club and city demand. “I’m keen to win at Brisbane Roar in (season) 25/26, and I’m willing to give it my best to make it happen. “I can’t wait to get going.”
McGarry’s title winning experience
Sydney Roar head coach Michael Valkanis believes McGarry’s experience winning an A-League title will be helpful. Valkanis stated, “James’ experience and ability to get up and down the wings from defence make him an excellent addition to the football club.” “In addition, James understands what it takes week after week to win a championship in this tournament. “Bringing that mentality into the changeroom makes him an invaluable addition to the squad.”
