In his first press conference as the new Plymouth Argyle manager, Tom Cleverley made fun of his former team, Watford.
Many were surprised by the decision to fire Cleverley following the conclusion of the 2024–2025 season. Watford barely finished 11 points below the top six with a team that, despite having a few good players, isn’t really near to that level, despite their dismal season finale in which they only managed four points out of a possible 21 in their final seven games.
Nevertheless, the Pozzo family believed that something needed to change, and the former Manchester United and Hornets midfielder was relieved of his responsibilities. Paulo Pezzolano, the Uruguayan manager, quickly replaced him at Vicarage Road.
Cleverley returned to management at Plymouth a little more than a month later, taking Miron Muslic’s place. After they had already made some summer recruits, the German team Schalke snatched away the Austrian manager, who Argyle didn’t expect to lose this summer.

In his first appearance as Plymouth’s new manager, Cleverley took a subtle aim at his previous club’s trigger happy when it comes to managers, although he hasn’t made a signing of his own since agreeing to a three-year contract at Home Park. When Pezzolano was hired in May, he became Watford’s eleventh manager since the Covid-19 outbreak began.
“Having met with David [Fox, Head of Football Operations] and then subsequently with Andrew [Parkinson, chief executive] and the board, and then finally with Simon [Hallett, club chairman], I got a really good feel for the people running the club,” Cleverley stated.
“I believed that my next managerial move needed to be a very solid one, moving to a great setting that sees a project through to completion. I experienced all of those emotions, which made my decision to travel to Argyle much simpler.
It’s possible that Tom Cleverley’s Plymouth road has some bumps.
It could be argued that Plymouth isn’t much more stable than the Hornets because the 35-year-old is their sixth manager since COVID struck. However, their head coach turnover has been more due to their success, which resulted in them being snatched by other clubs, or simply bad decisions, than Watford’s lack of patience under the Pozzos.
Cleverley, who was first thrown into the position on an interim basis out of shear necessity rather than any kind of track record, demonstrated over his more than a year at Vicarage Road that he is a Championship-level manager. This is a decrease in level.
He has new difficulties because of Argyle. He may experience some growing pains because he is unfamiliar with the club and its fan base. Fortunately for him, despite losing ace striker Ryan Hardie, he should have one of the stronger teams in League One.
