Club ‘renew’ transfer interest in Celtic misfit as major obstacle removed in pursuit of star with ‘great potential’

During loan spells at other Scottish Premiership clubs Hibs and St Mirren, the midfielder showed flashes of ability.

Celtic misfit Kwon Hyeok-kyu might leave Parkhead permanently this summer, with Austria Vienna renewing their interest in the South Korean midfielder.

The 24-year-old joined the Hoops in 2023 but has yet to make his competitive appearance. Brendan Rodgers signed Kwon from Busan IPark in his country, but he was shortly judged surplus to requirements and loaned out to rival top-flight team St Mirren.

He completed the entire season at Hibs, making 22 appearances and demonstrating flashes of potential, albeit he was used rarely as they moved out from the relegation zone.

According to transfer source Mark Hendry, Austria Vienna are considering a summer transfer. The Austrian Bundesliga team attempted to sign Kwon last season but was unable to do so owing to league loan limitations.

They had already reached their limit of six foreign loan players and were unable to sign any more, but Stephan Helm’s team is now considering a permanent move for the Korean Under-23 international.

Austria Vienna sees Celtic failure as having the possibility for growth and development.

It is thought that they have closely monitored his progress during his Premier League appearances over the last year and a half and continue to see him as a player with great potential for development.

Any prospective deal for the Scottish champion would most likely be a lucrative one, given Kwon’s restricted prospects in an area of the pitch that is notoriously difficult to break into at the best of circumstances.

A permanent exit is likely to benefit all parties, and while no formal offer has been made, Austria Vienna’s interest might drive a swift conclusion for a player whose career in Glasgow’s east end never properly began.
