Former Roma director Florent Ghisolfi gets appointed by Sunderland.

The addition of Florent Ghisolfi to a senior backroom position strengthens Sunderland’s off-field operations.

Ghisolfi, who just resigned from his most recent role as technical director at Roma, will collaborate with Kristjaan Speakman, Sunderland’s current sporting director. His main duties will be to find and hire talent.

Following Sunderland’s promotion the previous season, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has been eager to strengthen the club’s executive-level structure and is rumored to have had several discussions with Ghisolfi.

Even though several other teams, notably Juventus and Newcastle United, have reportedly expressed interest in the 40-year-old former midfielder, that has convinced him to transfer to Wearside.

Ghisolfi has a wealth of contacts throughout continental Europe and has served as sporting director at Lens, Nice, and Roma in the past.

The majority of Sunderland’s summer transfer activity will still center on acquiring young, relatively unproven players who are thought to be either undervalued or have significant development potential, despite Speakman’s remarks regarding “tweaking” the club’s recruitment model in the wake of winning promotion. Ghisolfi is now going to be crucial in locating and acquiring those guys.

Regis Le Bris, the manager of the Black Cats, is familiar with him because he briefly coached Lorient in his early career. Additionally, he mediated the January move of Enzo Le Fee from Roma to Sunderland, which the Black Cats made a club-record permanent earlier this summer.

Ghisolfi is anticipated to participate in the hiring process as Sunderland looks to bolster their coaching staff this summer.

He was officially departing Roma earlier this week, as the Serie A team announced that he was leaving the Italian capital to pursue a “new professional challenge.”

“AS Roma and technical director Florent Ghisolfi have mutually agreed to part ways,” Roma announced in a statement. Throughout the previous year, Florent has shown commitment and professionalism at a pivotal time for the team.

“We would like to thank him for his contributions and wish him luck as he takes on a new challenge in his career.”

With the new Premier League season less than two months away, Ghisolfi’s presence on Wearside is anticipated to be confirmed in the coming days.
