Sunderland are at the front of the queue for Dynamo Kyiv striker Vladyslav Vanat, as the newly-promoted Premier League side look to make a statement of intent ahead of their return to the top flight.

 

Vanat, 23, has emerged as one of the most exciting attacking prospects in Eastern Europe, having enjoyed a prolific campaign in Ukraine’s Premier League while also impressing in European competition. The forward registered 17 goals in all competitions last season, including three in the Europa League, showcasing his ability to perform at a high level against continental opposition.

 

Express Sport understands Sunderland’s interest in Vanat dates back several months. The Black Cats had identified the Ukrainian international as a priority target if they secured promotion, and following their dramatic 2-1 play-off final victory over Sheffield United at Wembley, they have wasted little time firming up their position.

 

Talks have already begun behind the scenes, with Sunderland chiefs said to be the most advanced in their pursuit compared to other Premier League suitors. Several clubs, including Crystal Palace and Brentford, are also believed to be tracking Vanat, but none have taken the same decisive steps.

 

However, a potential stumbling block remains — the transfer fee. Dynamo Kyiv are reportedly holding out for a figure in the region of £12-15 million, a substantial sum for a club just re-entering the Premier League. While Sunderland’s board are fully backing manager Michael Beale in the transfer market, there is an acceptance that they may have to grit their teeth to secure Vanat’s signature.

 

The striker is viewed not only as someone who can immediately contribute in the top flight, but as an investment for the future. Still only 23, Vanat has already earned senior caps for Ukraine and is regarded as a player with the potential to develop into a regular international.

 

A technically gifted forward with a strong physical presence and sharp instinct in the box, Vanat would bring qualities Sunderland have lacked since the departure of Ross Stewart. His ability to play both as a lone striker and in a front two adds versatility to Beale’s attacking options.

 

The Black Cats are keen to build on the momentum from their promotion campaign, and securing a signing of Vanat’s calibre would send a strong message of their ambition. But with competition likely to intensify and Kyiv holding firm on their valuation, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Sunderland can get the deal over the line.

 

For now, they remain in pole position — but only time will tell if they’re willing to pay the price.
