Gus Hamer’s potential £7m replacement ‘given permission’ to talk to Sheffield United

Ruben Selles is well aware of the need for new signings at Sheffield United, as the former Hull City boss fills a large Chris Wilder-shaped vacuum with last season’s Championship play-off finalists.

As things stand, Alfie Gilchrist, Ben Brereton Diaz, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, Hamza Choudhury, Harry Clarke, and Rob Holding, all of whom were on loan in the Steel City last season, will not be returning in 2025/26.

Unsurprisingly, Gus Hamer and Michael Cooper are fans of the Premier League, according to EFL Analysis. Rhian Brewster had another disappointing season in front of goal, but after 42 appearances across all competitions, his departure as a free agent at the end of June would see another key player leave.

“Obviously, some of the contracts are expiring. “Some players will not be able to join us for next season,” Ruben Selles revealed this week after being named Chris Wilder’s replacement.

“So, we expect some players to join us and make us even more competitive.”

The statements made about Midtjylland and Denmark Oliver Sorensen, an under-23 midfielder, is unlikely to escape unnoticed by Sheffield United’s important behind-the-scenes figures.

Sheffield United targets Oliver Sorensen could depart Midtjylland this summer.

Oliver Sorensen, a highly-rated player, was also linked with a move to Sheffield United in 2024.

He is apparently still on the radar a year later, despite allegations of interest from the German Bundesliga and an estimated price tag of around £7 million.

“We promised him [that Sorensen would be able to leave this summer],” Midtjylland chairman Claus Steinlein told Tipsbladet. “We’ve given him permission to look into the options, but it must also be something that Oliver will enjoy. And it must be something that we are comfortable with.

“We’re concerned about money, and Oliver’s concerned about doing the right thing in terms of sport. You need to make sure it works.”

As Sorensen concedes, this will not be an ordinary exit. The industrious center midfielder has been with Midtjylland for a decade, appearing in over 120 senior matches since his debut in 2019/20.

According to Sorensen, this is all he knows. “I’ve been in FC Midtjylland for ten or eleven years, so that’s all I know right now,” Sorensen tells Ekstra Bladet.

“But leaving is part of football. “When my time is up, it will seem odd. I also believe that as we move closer to what is about to happen, it will likely be sad for me.”

Sorensen could be charged with replacing Gustavo Hamer in Bramall Lane.

As one door shuts, a window of opportunity emerges for a man now competing for Denmark in the Under-21 European Championship. “If there is a good fit for all parties, we are willing to sell Sorensen,” confirms Jakob Larsen, Midtjylland Director.

In 2024, Sorensen won the Danish league title and was named the club’s Player of the Year. During an outstanding follow-up campaign, he scored ten goals and assisted five times from the center of the park.

Replacements for the talismanic Gus Hamer, who was voted the Championship’s best player last season, will be difficult to find. However, Sorensen possesses many of the necessary characteristics, including tenacity, superb ball-striking, and an eye for a defence-splitting pass.

Sheffield United are interested in Eredivisie ‘assist king’ Oliver Antman as a potential new signing. Willem Geubbels from St Gallen is another option. This week, Geubells’ father/agent hinted at a departure from Swiss football for a striker that Monaco once paid £17 million for.
