West Brom tie down exciting prospect to new deal

West Brom tie down exciting prospect to new deal.

West Brom sealed an important contract for the future.

Alfie Maughan, a highly touted player, has signed professional terms with Albion on his 17th birthday. Maughan’s development has been rewarded with a two-year contract following a good first season in the scholarship group, which saw the right-back provide 14 assists and help the Under-18s reach the FA Youth Cup’s last eight. The Tamworth native began his career in the club’s youth system at the age of six and worked his way up through the ranks.

He can play with both his left and right feet, covering any of the wide defensive positions and providing a significant attacking outlet down the flanks. Maughan, a regular set-piece taker, also played for the U21s last season, appearing in a few matches throughout Premier League 2 and the National League Cup.

According to Academy Manager Richard Stevens, “Alfie’s another boy who’s been in the system since pre-academy, is Albion through and through, and loves everything about the football club.”

“He comes in every day as if it’s the most important thing to him, and as a footballer, he’s really improved.

“When I first came in, Alfie was in the Under-12s, and he was already a standout, but he has continued to grow and improve throughout his school years. “During his first year as a scholar, Alfie continued his development.

He’s been great, making an influence on games with his deliveries with both feet from crosses, set-plays, and times in the final third, which is one of his strengths.

“At the opposite end of the pitch, he’s always improving his defending and is another player who has the potential to advance in his football career. “This club can help him do that, and it was critical that we offered Alfie this contract.”
