Jack MacKenzie arrived at a sunny Home Park on the eve of preseason, less than a month after joining from Argyle, eager to finish his media obligations and get started in the South West of England.
Days after the Dons defeated Celtic on penalties to win their first Scottish Cup in more than three decades, the former Aberdeen full-back decided to leave his hometown and move to Plymouth.
Even though Devon was a very different place from the North East of Scotland, Jack thought it was time to move on, and the allure of Argyle was just what the Scotsman needed.
“I’m so happy to be here,” MacKenzie said to Argyle TV. Since I formally signed a few weeks ago, I feel like it’s been a while coming, but I’m thrilled. In contrast to Aberdeen, it’s pleasant and sunny down here! I am eagerly anticipating it.
“I thought the time had come for me to leave Aberdeen. Since I was nine years old, I have spent my entire career there, and I felt prepared for a new challenge and a new league. It seemed obvious to me when I learnt of Argyle’s interest.
“It’s just what I wanted.” It is a large club with a sizable following. I think the team is improving as well, even if they were demoted the previous season.
It seemed to fit perfectly. One thing that stuck was the Green Army, and based on what I’ve heard of players who have played in England, I can see how fantastic of a club they are.
I think all of those things are great, and after learning about the interest, I found out a little more about the group. In the end, it was obvious because I enjoyed what I heard.
Although Jack played for Aberdeen for more than 16 years, he made his first-team debut against Dundee United in a league match in 2021.
The 24-year-old has since made over 100 appearances, including three goals, and he has nothing but positive things to say about his time and growth with the Scottish team.
“I’m really proud to be playing for Aberdeen,” he remarked. It fulfilled a dream.
Playing a hundred games after making my debut was an incredible experience, and winning the Scottish Cup was the cherry on top.
Even now, it’s a “pinch-me” moment and the ideal way to quit that football team.
It’s a fantastic club, but I’m excited to get started since I believe this one will be equally fantastic. I developed a little bit later than others.
“I made my debut against Dundee United a few months later, and I took off after that. Even if there have been setbacks, everything seems to have built up to the Scottish Cup final, and winning makes me feel like my path was flawless and finished.
Although MacKenzie acknowledged that he was eager to get started and begin his career in green, he also made sure he was checking off his fitness levels because the festivities and final were only a few weeks before the start of pre-season.
I went on loan to Forfar Athletic in Scottish League One when I was, I believe, twenty years old. It was the finest thing for me, even though I just played 15 or so games. I had a fantastic coach and guys who supported me during my first experience playing men’s football.
MacKenzie stated: “I haven’t had much time off, but I kept myself busy because the cup final was less than four weeks ago.” I can’t wait to get started, meet the boys and staff, settle in, and go.
“I have primarily played left-back. But I like to think I’m really versatile on that left-hand side since I’ve played both left centre-back and wing-back a lot in European games. I like the non-negotiables:
I work hard, I like to think I’m pretty good at defence in one-on-one situations, I get involved and forward, I cross the box, and I reach the bye-line. I like to assume I’m capable of everything.
“As a full-back, I believe I’m an all-around player, but I also know I have a lot to improve, and I’m eager to work with the new coaching staff to get even better.”
