What Alan Biggs said to Dejphon Chansiri in 2017

Dejphon Chansiri was sent stern warning in 2017 that decision would crumble Sheffield Wednesday, he did not listen

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has always been a decisive character in S6, and the ongoing club situation was arguably called back in 2017.

Members of the backroom staff also went without payment for a couple of weeks, which led to a Sheffield Wednesday supporters group raising money for those who were owed their wages by Dejphon Chansiri.

Many will believe that the initial inability of Chansiri to pay the players back in March was the start of what was going to be a turbulent summer, but the writing has been on the wall for years.

What Alan Biggs said to Dejphon Chansiri in 2017

Sheffield Wednesday have accumulated several concerns going into the 2025/26 season, and it seems as though many fans have hit the breaking point.

The 1867 Group, alongside several other Sheffield Wednesday supporters groups, have been vocal in their discontent for the way in which the club is being run, and with players and staff going unpaid, you cannot blame them.

Only recently have the financial struggles significantly hindered Sheffield Wednesday, who will be unable to pay a transfer or loan fee under the current embargo, whilst also having a cap of £7k per week to offer new players – but the issues have deep roots.

Dating back to 2017, off the back of two failed Championship play-off campaigns, the first of which ending in defeat to Hull City in the final, whilst the Owls bowed out of the semis the following year, Alan Biggs reviewed the club situation at the time, as well as Chansiri’s role.

In relation to the increase in prices at the Hillsborough Stadium, especially about the kits back in 2017, Biggs said: “Off the field, I think Chansiri needs to remember where he is operating – an essentially working-class city where supporters are intensely loyal but money is tight. Many voices must be stressing this.

Biggs also touched on the lack of direction regarding transfers eight years ago, to which he said: “My impression is that he needs specialised guidance to construct a proper joined-up transfer policy which shouldn’t over-rely on one man, minus an intimate knowledge of the game, calling the shots.”

Sheffield Wednesday kit concern could ring true again this summer

There is a priority list for Sheffield Wednesday’s various concerns this summer, with unpaid players at the top of that. However, one problem that may need to be addressed at some point this summer is the uncertainty surrounding the 2025/26 third kit that was put up for pre-orders earlier this season.

Despite a kit model not being released, many fans blindly pre-ordered the shirt with the fair expectation that it would arrive. There is plenty of time for Chansiri to follow up on the promise of the shirt with the retro badge, with it stating that it would be released this summer, but time is ticking for the club that has been radio silent in recent weeks.

Back in 2017, the concerns were around pricing, but now Sheffield Wednesday fans are not fully confident that the kit they paid for will still be in the works at the club. No fixed date means that there is still time for the club to deliver, but this, on top of many other concerns, is not helped by the ongoing silence.
