Support from Fans Seen as Vital to Survival for Sunderland and Leeds
The return of Sunderland to the Premier League after an eight-year absence is generating excitement ahead of the new campaign. Following a 2-1 win over Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final, supporters at the Stadium of Light are preparing to welcome the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool.
Leeds United and Burnley also secured promotion through automatic spots, setting the stage for a competitive season among the newly promoted teams. Former Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City midfielder David Dunn believes that the fanbases of all three clubs can make a real difference in helping their sides stay up.
In his comments to OLBG, Dunn explained: “The fans could really help things at Sunderland. The gap between the Championship and Premier League has grown, but fan backing—especially at home—can be a big advantage. Home form will be key for Sunderland, Leeds, and Burnley.”
Home Form and Atmosphere Could Make the Difference
Dunn highlighted the significance of strong support, particularly during home matches, suggesting that fans can provide a psychological edge over visiting teams. He praised Burnley manager Scott Parker for the work done so far and pointed to the passionate fanbases at Leeds and Sunderland as critical assets.
“The supporters can really get behind these clubs and be like a 12th man. At home, that support can help close the quality gap between divisions,” he added.
Henderson Return Touted as Valuable Leadership Move
As Sunderland begins their Premier League preparations, transfer activity has already started. The £20 million permanent signing of Enzo Le Fee from Roma was triggered following the club’s promotion at Wembley. More signings are expected in the coming weeks.
Among the most talked-about possibilities is a return for Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson. Since leaving Sunderland for Liverpool in 2011, Henderson has collected Champions League and Premier League titles, among several other honours.
Dunn believes that a move for the experienced England international could provide a major boost: “Jordan Henderson is a real leader. He gives 110% every time. Sunderland could benefit from his leadership and experience, especially as they take on the challenge of top-flight football again.”
