‘Fantastic’ – EFL Side Urged to Sign Sheffield Wednesday Man by Former Player

Former EFL striker Kevin Gallacher has encouraged ambitious League One side Wrexham to make a bold move for Sheffield Wednesday veteran Barry Bannan, describing the Scottish midfielder as a “fantastic” potential signing.

Bannan, 35, is out of contract at Hillsborough at the end of this month and has yet to commit his future to the Owls. With Sheffield Wednesday preparing for another tough campaign in the Championship following their narrow escape from relegation last season, questions remain about whether the club will offer their long-serving skipper fresh terms.

Gallacher, speaking on a Football League discussion panel, believes Wrexham should seize the opportunity and swoop in for Bannan if he becomes a free agent, citing the midfielder’s leadership, experience, and quality on the ball.

“Barry Bannan would be a fantastic signing for Wrexham. He’s got bags of experience, he’s still fit and sharp, and he’s exactly the type of character you want in a dressing room pushing for promotion,” said Gallacher.

“Wrexham have made ambitious signings before, and this would be another smart move that shows they mean business.”

A Decorated EFL Veteran

Bannan has made over 350 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday since joining from Crystal Palace in 2015. He has been the heartbeat of their midfield, earning praise for his creativity, tenacity, and professionalism.

The former Aston Villa man has had a long career in English football, playing in both the Premier League and across the EFL, and has remained a pivotal figure at Wednesday despite their struggles in recent years.

With Bannan’s future still uncertain, his availability on a free transfer is likely to spark interest from clubs across League One and the Championship — but Wrexham’s growing reputation and financial backing could put them in pole position should they decide to act.

Wrexham’s Transfer Ambitions

Wrexham, backed by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have enjoyed a rapid rise through the leagues and are now targeting a serious push for Championship promotion. The club has already shown its pulling power with the signings of experienced players such as James McClean, Steven Fletcher, and Elliot Lee in recent seasons.

Adding a player of Bannan’s pedigree would represent another statement of intent from the Welsh outfit, who are known for combining smart recruitment with strong off-field branding and support.

What Next for Bannan?

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl has remained tight-lipped over contract talks with several senior players, including Bannan. While the club is believed to be focusing on a more youthful and dynamic squad profile heading into the new campaign, the potential departure of their long-time captain would leave a considerable void in both ability and leadership.

Whether Bannan remains at Hillsborough or seeks a new challenge elsewhere, his next move will be one to watch — and Wrexham may just be the next chapter in his storied career.
