Anthony Gordon Reportedly Prefers Liverpool Move Amid Growing Transfer Talk
Anthony Gordon has reportedly expressed a desire to join Liverpool if he ever departs Newcastle United, despite attention from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. Since his £45 million switch from Everton in January 2023, the winger has established himself as a key figure at Newcastle, contributing 22 goals and 23 assists in 106 matches. His performances have earned him a place in the England setup, and top clubs have taken notice.
Gordon was linked to Liverpool last summer when Newcastle explored ways to balance their financial books under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Though talks reportedly occurred, Liverpool couldn’t meet Newcastle’s valuation. Instead, Newcastle offloaded Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton to generate the necessary funds.
Despite Liverpool’s longstanding interest, journalist Graeme Bailey told TBR Football that a transfer this summer is unlikely: “He probably will end up at Liverpool one day… but not this summer. Liverpool is his preferred choice, though Arsenal and Chelsea are watching the situation closely.”

Liverpool Unlikely to Pursue Gordon Immediately Due to Other Priorities
Although new Liverpool manager Arne Slot is believed to admire Gordon, the club’s current transfer focus lies elsewhere. Centre-back remains a key priority, with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi reportedly at the top of their list following the decision to sell Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. Additionally, Liverpool are also seeking to strengthen at centre forward, with Darwin Nunez potentially making way and PSG’s Hugo Ekitike emerging as a potential replacement.
Given these priorities and no plans to part with winger Luis Diaz — as reaffirmed by reliable journalist Paul Joyce — Liverpool’s budget may not stretch to a high-profile wide player like Gordon this summer. Therefore, unless a significant outgoing occurs in that area, a formal move for Gordon seems improbable for now.
Newcastle’s Transfer Balancing Act Could See Another Star Exit
While Gordon is content at Newcastle and has no intention of forcing a move, speculation continues around Newcastle’s need to make a high-value sale to meet financial obligations. Despite the club’s insistence that they are not under pressure to sell, some industry observers remain unconvinced.
Graeme Bailey suggested that Newcastle could consider offloading a different big name — potentially midfielder Joelinton — to generate funds, especially if Saudi Pro League clubs come calling. Though Gordon has long admired Liverpool and would likely consider a move there positively, his immediate focus remains with Newcastle, where he is flourishing under Eddie Howe’s guidance.
