In their pursuit of Rob Atkinson, a defender for Bristol City, Pompey has suffered a significant setback.
Rob Atkinson, a defender for Bristol City, has dealt Pompey a serious setback.
The centre-back has signed new terms to stay at Ashton Gate, according to the Robins.
The 26-year-old’s contract was about to expire this summer, and following an exceptional loan period, John Mousinho‘s team was eager to make a move during the transfer season.
Atkinson, however, has committed to Bristol City for the future by signing a new deal that will keep him there until 2028.
After spending the second part of the season on loan at Oxford United, Pompey was interested in bringing the former player back to Fratton Park.
The Kassam Stadium young player, who arrived in January, made 15 appearances for Mousinho’s team and was crucial to their struggle for survival.
Atkinson returned from the sidelines early to aid Pompey’s fight for safety in the last four games, after missing two months due to a calf injury he incurred in the team’s 2-1 victory over QPR in February.
And Mousinho, who was eager to add the Bristol City player to his backline for the upcoming season, was pleased by his impressive play.
It is contingent upon the actions of Bristol City. We have a great connection with them, and they are aware of how much we appreciate him even if he is not one of our players. We shall see.
“Yes, we are interested if Rob is available this summer.” I am aware that he has relished his stay here, and it has also given his career a boost. It’s been fantastic for him after two years out.
“We will definitely try if there is anything we can do.” I don’t think that bringing him back is completely out of the question. Obviously he is a Bristol City player and it’s going to be up to them what they do. Hopefully, they haven’t watched his last three games.
