Leeds United facing PL competition for 26-y/o int’l, Wolves man seen as alternative – Report

Wolves player considered as backup for Leeds United in PL race for 26-year-old international

When Junior Firpo’s contract ends in a little more than a week, it is anticipated that his scheduled move to Real Betis would be completed, giving Leeds a major task to complete.

Leeds knows that they cannot enter a Premier League survival quest without a solid back four to develop from under Daniel Farke, thus they must sign top level talent.

The 26-year-old, who is approaching the end of his contract, may be available for Leeds on a fair contract after making an impression for the Ligue 1 team in both the league and the Champions League.

However, Leeds may have competition for the Swede’s services because Burnley, their recently promoted rivals, and Everton, their opening-day rivals, are reportedly also interested, according to LeedsLive.

Gudmundsson previously claimed in an interview that moving to the Premier League would be his desire, although he has also stated that an exit from Lille may happen this summer:

“I’m content with my work thus far, but I’m also highly focused on the future. I would love to visit the Premier League someday because I grew up watching it. I’ve always enjoyed watching that league,” Gudmundsson said in an interview with GiveMeSport in November 2024.

The source also mentions Leeds’ adoration for Wolves’ Hugo Bueno, who spent 24/25 on loan at Feyenoord following prior ties to Elland Road, should they be unable to acquire Gudmundsson.

Given that Gudmundsson will start, Leeds should have an advantage over the majority of other teams vying for his services.

Although Burnley and Everton both have possibilities at left-back, Leeds enters these talks without a sure starter, which would be Gudmundsson.

Bueno is another good possibility, so losing out wouldn’t be disastrous, but Leeds will realize they need to finalize a deal, hopefully before the start of the season.

The urgency to improve a key aspect of Leeds’ team could lead the 49ers to outbid Burnley or Everton for this agreement.
