‘I want to…’ – QPR Man Outlines Aim for Future After Transfer Move.
Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Murphy Cooper has outlined his ambition to become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper in the future, following the announcement of his new long-term contract and a season-long loan move to Barnsley.
The 23-year-old shot-stopper has committed his future to the Championship side but will continue his development in League One with Barnsley for the 2025/26 campaign. Cooper spent last season at Stevenage, also in the third tier, where he impressed with a string of consistent performances.
In total, Cooper made 40 appearances across all competitions for Stevenage, including 37 league matches. His reliability between the posts and ability to marshal the defence were standout features of his game, and his performances clearly caught the attention of the decision-makers at Loftus Road.
Speaking to QPR’s official website after signing his new deal, Cooper said: “I’m really, really, really pleased. I’ve been at QPR a long time and I want to continue to be here, so I was delighted when the club offered me a new contract – I was itching to sign it. I love it here.”
The young goalkeeper’s passion for the club was evident, and he made no secret of his long-term target – to eventually become QPR’s number one.
He continued: “I want to do as well as I can to come back and play here. I really enjoyed my time at Stevenage and it was probably the best season I’ve had so far – the highest level I’ve played at, too. I played 40 games, kept quite a few clean sheets and put in some good performances, so it was brilliant for me.
“It’s just about bridging the gap to eventually be the number one here. I just need to keep going, keep playing and keep improving.”
Cooper’s progression has been steady in recent years. Having come through the youth ranks at QPR, the club have handled his development carefully, giving him valuable experience in senior football while ensuring he remains tied to their long-term plans.
His move to Barnsley is the next step in that journey. The Tykes will be aiming for promotion from League One next season, and Cooper’s addition could prove pivotal to their ambitions. For the goalkeeper, it represents another opportunity to hone his skills, face pressure situations, and continue building the consistency that will be crucial if he is to eventually take the gloves at QPR.
The club’s decision to offer him a new deal indicates the high regard in which he is held. With veteran goalkeepers and competition for places in the Championship, Cooper will need to be patient – but his commitment and clarity of purpose suggest he has both the mindset and ability to make that leap.
