Members News : Former Sky Blues Midfielder Gus Hamer is 28 today! Happy Birthday Gus!
Today, we wish our Brazilian-born former midfielder Gus Hamer a very happy 28th birthday.
Gus was born on June 24, 1997, in Itajaí, Brazil, but moved to the Netherlands at a young age. He went on to play for the Netherlands at the U18 (1 appearance) and U20 (3 appearances).
Hamer began his football career in the development system of Dutch club Feyenoord. He made two first-team appearances before going on loan to FC Dordrecht for the 2017-18 season, where he played 39 games. Following his loan spell at Dordrecht, Hamer moved on to PEC Zwolle, where he made 48 appearances and scored four goals. The first of the four goals came against FC Utrecht, and it was scored directly from a free kick.
Gus joined for the Sky Blues on July 3, 2020, and made his EFL Cup debut against MK Dons on September 5. City won that match 1-0. Hamer’s first goal for the Sky Blues came in a 3-2 win over Reading on October 27, 2020.
Gus scored the winning goal against Middlesbrough in the second leg of the Championship playoff semi-final on May 17, 2023, and Coventry went on to face Luton Town in the Play-Off Final at Wembley Stadium. He scored again in the final, but the Hatters were promoted following a penalty shootout.
Sarah Morris welcomes Gus to CCFPA
Gus left the Sky Blues on August 12, 2023, to join his former CCFC teammate Callum O’Hare at Sheffield United, who at the time were a Premiership team.
In April 2025,Hamer was voted EFL Championship Player of the Season in the same season that the Blades nearly missed promotion to the Premier League after losing the Play-Off Final 1-2 to Sunderland (who had previously defeated the Sky Blues’ Play-Off dreams). Gus has returned to the CBS Arena to watch his former teammates on several occasions since leaving Coventry, when his other commitments have allowed. Have a lovely 28th birthday, Gus. We hope you will visit us again soon, whether to watch a game or attend a CCFPA event.
