Sheffield United Boss Ruben Selles Tipped For Success by Lee Hendrie
Sheffield United manager Ruben Selles has been backed to thrive at Bramall Lane, with former EFL player and pundit Lee Hendrie claiming the Spaniard has “lots of potential” as he embarks on a new challenge in the Championship.
Selles, 41, was officially confirmed as the new head coach of the Blades following the departure of club legend Chris Wilder earlier this month. Wilder left the club after narrowly missing out on promotion back to the Premier League, with United suffering heartbreak in the play-off final against Sunderland.
In appointing Selles, the Sheffield United board opted for a coach with a progressive, modern approach, something Hendrie believes could benefit the South Yorkshire club in the long run.
“Ruben Selles is a coach with lots of potential,” Hendrie said during an appearance on Sky Sports News. “He’s done a solid job with limited resources in the past and his attention to detail really stands out. Sheffield United are giving him a real platform now, and I think he’ll make the most of it.”
Selles arrives at Bramall Lane with a reputation for developing young players and instilling an attractive, possession-based style of play. He most recently worked with Reading in League One, where despite significant off-field issues, he earned praise for maintaining a competitive and well-organised side.
Prior to his time at Reading, Selles also had a stint in the Premier League with Southampton, where he briefly served as interim manager. While his time in charge was short-lived and ultimately ended in relegation, many observers noted his tactical acumen and composure under pressure.
Now at Sheffield United, the task ahead is a tough one. The Blades will once again be among the favourites for promotion, but with stiff competition from clubs like Norwich City, Middlesbrough, and relegated Premier League sides, Selles will need to hit the ground running.
The Spaniard is expected to oversee a squad overhaul this summer, with several senior players out of contract and others likely to attract interest from elsewhere. Selles has already spoken of his desire to “build a team that can evolve and grow” while balancing expectations for immediate success.
Hendrie, who made over 300 appearances across the top two divisions during his career, believes Selles’ continental approach might be just what United need after years of pragmatic football.
“It’s going to be a shift, especially for the fans used to a certain style under Wilder,” he said. “But Ruben won’t try to change everything overnight. He’s smart enough to know the Championship is about grinding results when needed.”
With pre-season preparations underway and transfer plans being finalised, Selles will be keen to stamp his authority early and show why the Blades were right to bet on him.
As Sheffield United look to bounce back stronger and push for automatic promotion, all eyes will be on the new man in the dugout — and if Hendrie’s prediction is anything to go by, Ruben Selles may just be the surprise package of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.
