‘I Want Him’ – Ruben Selles Keen for Sheffield United Man to Stay This Summer
Sheffield United’s new manager Ruben Selles has expressed a strong desire to keep midfielder Gustavo Hamer at Bramall Lane this summer, amid ongoing speculation over the player’s future.
Hamer, 27, was one of the Blades’ standout performers during their 2024/25 campaign, which saw them fall just short of promotion after a heartbreaking play-off final defeat to Sunderland at Wembley. Following the disappointment, Sheffield United parted ways with Chris Wilder and appointed Selles as his successor in a bid to freshen up their approach heading into the new season.
Speaking to club media in his first extended interview since taking charge, Selles was clear about his admiration for the Dutch-born Brazilian and made no secret of his wish to retain Hamer’s services as he begins planning for the next Championship campaign.
> “I want him here,” said Selles. “Gustavo is a player with quality, intelligence, and leadership. He’s very important to this group, and I see him playing a big role in what we’re building going forward.”
Hamer, who joined the Blades from Coventry City in August 2023, has attracted interest from several clubs in both the Premier League and abroad, following another productive season in which he contributed five goals and eight assists from midfield. His energy, vision, and technical ability have made him one of the most influential players at the club.
However, with just one year remaining on his current deal, Hamer’s future is the subject of mounting speculation. Reports have linked him with a move to top-flight sides such as Burnley and Crystal Palace, and foreign clubs are also said to be monitoring his situation.
Despite the uncertainty, Selles is hopeful that the midfielder will buy into his long-term vision for Sheffield United and resist the temptation to move on.
> “This club has ambition. We want to return to the Premier League, and we want to do it with players like Gustavo. Of course, there will always be interest when a player performs well, but we will do everything we can to keep him here.”
The club hierarchy are also believed to be keen to open talks with Hamer over a possible contract extension, although no formal negotiations have begun. Sources close to the club suggest that the player is open to staying—provided he sees a clear pathway back to the top flight and the right support in terms of recruitment and vision.
Selles is expected to be backed in the transfer market this summer, as Sheffield United look to bounce back stronger from their play-off disappointment. But keeping hold of key players like Hamer may prove just as important as any new arrival.
For now, the new manager’s message is clear: he wants Gustavo Hamer at the heart of his rebuild.
“This team needs leaders,” Selles added. “Gustavo is one of them.”
As the summer window unfolds, all eyes will be on whether the Blades can hold onto one of their prized assets—and whether Hamer himself sees his future in South Yorkshire.
