Reading have confirmed the signing of former Academy youngster Jack Stevens on a two-year deal.
The 27-year-old spent a year in the Royals’ junior system a decade ago and also attended the Sir John Madejski Academy before moving on to EFL clubs such as Oxford United, Port Vale, and Cambridge United.
Stevens spent nine years with the U’s, progressing through the age levels to the First Team and making over 70 appearances.
Stevens would spend the 2022/23 season on loan at fellow League One club Port Vale, where he would make 27 league appearances before his Oxford contract expired in 2023.
Stevens joined Cambridge United on a free transfer and has made over 50 appearances for the Amber Army. He played the entire 90 minutes of his team’s 3-1 loss to Noel Hunt’s Royals on New Year’s Day.
Club Chairman Rob Couhig said on the new addition: “We’re delighted to welcome Jack to the squad as we continue to grow our team for the new season.
“He has extensive experience in this league and will be an important member of our goalkeeping team as we aim to strengthen in all areas. He’s a fantastic kid, and we know he’ll come in and work hard with Joel and Rob to earn that starting job.”
Hunt, First Team Manager, added: “We’re happy to bring a keeper of Jack’s height and skill to the club. He’s someone Rob [Shay] has known for a long time and has a strong track record in this division.”
He is the second acquisition, following Paudie O’Connor’s entrance last week.
