Football League World has learnt exclusively that Barnsley midfielder Jon Russell is being pursued by Derby County, Oxford United, Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City.
With 11 goals and two assists in 46 games, the 24-year-old had the best season of his career with the Tykes in 2024–2025.
With their present managers in control, Derby, Oxford, Blackburn, and Stoke City are all being guided into their first summer transfer window.
Blackburn, Stoke, Oxford, and Derby are interested in Barnsley’s Jon Russell.
The 24-year-old is a flexible central midfielder who has played both attacking and defensive midfield positions.
Russell, who plays for Jamaica, has been abroad with his country during the month of June, participating in most of the games against the British Virgin Islands, Guatemala (scoring), Guadeloupe (scoring), and Panama, respectively.
After being given a fresh start offensively for Barnsley, he has been flourishing and last season had by far his finest scoring season, with 11 goals across all competitions surpassing his previous best of four in 2023–2024.
Russell, who came through Chelsea’s academy system, has played for Accrington Stanley and Huddersfield Town, respectively, after failing to make a senior appearance for the Blues.
He was acquired by Barnsley from the Terriers in January 2023, and he has since grown to be a valued member of the Oakwell community.
Due to Russell’s contract status, Barnsley might need to make a monetary infusion this summer.
However, Russell’s contract predicament puts the Tykes in a challenging position.
Since their star midfield player only has a year left on his present contract at Oakwell, the team may need to sell him this summer while they can still get a sizable price.
If not, they run a serious chance of losing their valuable commodity for nothing come summertime, which could be quite expensive for the team.
After a brief taste of second-tier football during his time with Huddersfield, Russell may now want to challenge himself in the Championship after proving himself to be a top-tier player at the League One level.
Since he last played in the division more over two years ago, the Jamaican will feel like he has become a lot more polished and developed player, and at 24, he will undoubtedly want to play at the greatest level for the remainder of his career.
As a result, he could have a great chance of not only moving up, but also of getting a legitimate opportunity to play regular games at Derby, Oxford, Blackburn, and Stoke City.
