‘Sat Down At The Table’ – Southampton Officials Hold More Talks Over Star’s Sale

 

Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan has once again held in-depth discussions with Southampton officials, as the Turkish giants intensify their efforts to secure the permanent signing of Nigerian forward Paul Onuachu.

 

Sources in Turkey have revealed that Doğan “sat down at the table” with Southampton representatives on Wednesday in a bid to push through the move after weeks of back-and-forth between the two clubs. Trabzonspor believed they had struck an agreement with the Saints earlier in June, only for talks to hit a wall amid accusations that the Premier League side were shifting the terms at the last moment.

 

Onuachu, who enjoyed a productive loan spell at Trabzonspor last season, is eager to remain in Turkey. The towering striker rediscovered his scoring form in the Süper Lig and became a key player under Abdullah Avcı, earning plaudits for his aerial dominance and poise in front of goal. He is said to be pushing for the transfer to be completed swiftly so he can rejoin the squad ahead of their pre-season tour.

 

However, the Turkish club have grown increasingly frustrated with Southampton’s handling of negotiations. Reports claim that the Saints have continued to alter their demands, particularly with regard to performance-related bonuses and the structure of the transfer fee. Trabzonspor were under the impression that an agreement had been reached, only to be met with new financial hurdles.

 

Despite the tension, Wednesday’s meeting in person signals a desire from both parties to find a solution. Southampton’s new boss Will Still, who watched from the stands during recent meetings, is understood to have no concrete plans to reintegrate Onuachu into his squad for the 2025/26 season. The Saints are undergoing a rebuild after narrowly missing out on Premier League promotion, and Onuachu is seen as a player who could be moved on to free up space and resources.

 

For Trabzonspor, landing Onuachu permanently is a major priority as they look to mount a title challenge next season. The club have been relatively quiet in the transfer market so far but view the 30-year-old as central to their plans.

 

While the outcome of the latest round of talks remains uncertain, the fact that Doğan has flown to England and engaged face-to-face with Southampton officials underscores the seriousness of Trabzonspor’s pursuit. The coming days could prove decisive.

 

Should both sides find common ground, a deal could be concluded swiftly — but Trabzonspor have made it clear they are unwilling to entertain further last-minute changes. Southampton, meanwhile, must decide whether to stand firm on their revised terms or accept a compromise to offload a player who appears to have no future at St Mary’s.
