The £900k QPR deal that Birmingham City will hope they don’t regret.

The Kwame Poku next destination saga is about to come to an end, with Queens Park Rangers looking like the most likely destination for the Peterborough United winger.
A departure from the Weston Homes Stadium between last summer and this time was nearly unavoidable for Poku.
Peterborough’s business model is based on attracting talent, developing it, and then selling it for a profit. Ronnie Edwards, Harrison Burrows, and Ephron Mason-Clark all left League One during the offseason in 2024. It is now time for Ghanaians to advance to greater heights.
Peterborough’s hierarchy were concerned that Poku’s agency would lead him away from England, resulting in less money for them because they would not be entitled to as much compensation for the departing free agent.
Darragh MacAnthony, Posh’s chairman, claimed that even if the 23-year-old wasn’t sold, the club would still gain “millions and millions” from him. Sky Sports has now claimed that Poku has agreed to join QPR for a fee of £900,000 plus add-ons.
Birmingham may come to regret missing out on Kwame Poku
According to Mark McAdam, Swansea City had also negotiated terms with the third-tier club, and Rangers were once anticipated to be in the running for the Peterborough star before the west London side hijacked the deal.
Birmingham City were also long-time fans of his. Football League World exclusively revealed that the League One winners were contemplating a £30,000 weekly offer for him. They, on the other hand, became dissatisfied with the slow pace of events and began to look elsewhere.
They have missed out on a possible gem, particularly for a six-figure fee, and they may come to regret not winning this race.
Even in a season that was disrupted by an injury in late 2024, which didn’t allow Peterborough to make any real money from Poku in the January transfer window, the Ghanaian still managed to rack up 20 combined goals and assists. He had done similar in the campaign prior, too, netting 11 times and helping others to do so on seven occasions.

Kwame Poku is set up for success at Loftus Road
QPR will be able to add the winger, who has reportedly had a medical with the Hoops, to an increasingly dynamic attack that will also include Karamoko Dembele, a fit former wonderkid.
Birmingham, after being promoted from the Championship, will face Julien Stephan’s side twice next season. If the Peterborough winger’s move to Loftus Road goes as planned, Chris Davies and his side will be able to experience personally what they have been missing out on.
There is no assurance that Poku will be able to make the transition from League One to Championship. He will face a significant increase in defensive quality, making it difficult for him to post the same spectacular numbers he did in the third tier. If any player has justified such a transfer in recent seasons, it is Poku.
He is a very direct winger, but also a selfless one. He is not a ball-hogging goalscorer who will slow down the momentum of others. He engages his teammates in strikes and can help them finish moves as well as he can.
One major advantage of joining QPR over Birmingham is that he will be one of the show’s stars, much as he was at Peterborough.
City’s roster is so packed with talent that if Poku hadn’t hit the ground running, he wouldn’t have been guaranteed a starting spot most weeks.
He should be able to play as freely as he has in the blue and white stripes of QPR, which will be critical to getting the most out of him.
