The Bristol Rovers have started to reveal their most recent additions as the summer transfer market is in full swing. Additionally, it means that some people will be avidly waiting for information on who players may be moving in the other direction. Bristol Rovers has a number of players who are probably of interest to teams higher up.

The Bristol Rovers leadership may have a difficult decision about two of their highly valued assets, Connor Taylor and Jed Ward, in order to prevent two terrible situations from happening. When it comes to one, Bristol Rovers are strong, but not so much with the other.

Connor Taylor

League One team Peterborough United has shown interest in 23-year-old Connor Taylor; Rovers are said to have turned down the Posh’s initial offer. Rovers may have competition to keep their star defender as other League One and League Two teams are also interested in Taylor.

Taylor’s contract is just one year old, and Rovers, like another important Gas player, Luke Thomas, will have to decide whether to cash in on any interest or start negotiations for a new deal. If no deal is reached, the two players might go on a free.

When Connor Taylor signed, the Gas paid Stoke an unknown price estimated to be approximately £300,000. Rovers could seek to recover part of this money before they miss out on the chance if his contract expires.

Taylor was one of the best players and won Bristol Rovers player of the year for the 2024–2025 season, despite being at the core of crucial team mistakes that resulted in goals being given up previous season.

Taylor has shown his love for the Gas on several occasions and is unquestionably a fan favourite. Taylor was almost ever referenced in the concerns made by fans over the squad’s lack of effort during the previous campaign. However, he was criticised for his expensive distractions during critical moments, and Taylor has criticised some of his own performances from the previous campaign.

With the return of Alfie Kilgour, the Gas have begun to add center-backs, but losing Taylor would be devastating, especially since James Wilson’s exit was recently confirmed.

Jed Ward

When it comes to academy breakout custodian Jed Ward, Bristol Rovers are in a far better position.

Bristol Rovers have the best chance of winning any interest in the England youngster since Ward only signed a new contract in March 2024, which was a four-year agreement with a club option to extend by another year.

Given how long his contract is, Rovers would probably receive a sizable offer for a guy who has played for England at the junior level. Although that may be partly offset by the fact that he was number one when the Gas were demoted the previous season, Ward is largely seen as a rising star.

Rovers may still require a seasoned goalie despite the acquisition. One with several years of EFL first-team experience, especially because the Gas have two young goalkeepers who show promise, but they are both now club property. This is different from recent seasons when the Gas have chosen to loan in a potential from a higher league.

In the event that Rovers sign a third custodian, this might potentially make it tempting to loan Ward out once more. That would undoubtedly be a significant blow to Jed Ward’s growth, as many believed he would be the Rovers’ top player for the upcoming season. It may also encourage Ward to consider other possibilities, but his long-term deal might restrict his options.
