Luke Rothwell has moved to reassure Oldham Athletic fans that the club is firmly backing manager Micky Mellon with a “very competitive” summer transfer budget as the Latics gear up for their return to the Football League.

 

Following their National League promotion triumph, optimism is running high among supporters—and Rothwell, son of chairman Frank Rothwell and a key figure in the club’s hierarchy, has confirmed that serious investment is being made to ensure the team is equipped for the challenges of League Two.

 

Speaking at the club’s *Party at the Park* celebration event, Luke Rothwell was in buoyant mood alongside his family, including sister Su Schofield and parents Frank and Judith. But while the atmosphere was festive, his message was one of serious intent regarding Oldham’s future.

 

“We’ve given Micky a very competitive budget for this division,” Rothwell said. “We’re ambitious and we don’t want to just make up the numbers. We want to push on, and that starts with giving our manager the tools he needs to be successful.”

 

Micky Mellon, who was appointed in February and steered the team to promotion with a strong run of form, has already begun shaping the squad in his image. Rothwell’s words will come as welcome confirmation that Mellon won’t be operating under financial constraints as he looks to strengthen key areas of the team.

 

“Micky knows what it takes to win promotion in the EFL,” Rothwell added. “He’s got our full backing, and we’re all aligned in our vision. He’s been identifying targets and we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to bring in the right characters.”

 

Oldham’s return to League Two comes after three turbulent years outside the Football League, during which the club endured managerial changes, ownership uncertainty, and struggles on the pitch. The Rothwell family’s takeover in 2022 signalled the start of a new era, one rooted in stability, community engagement, and forward momentum.

 

Luke Rothwell was quick to credit the fans for sticking by the club through the difficult times and promised they would be rewarded with ambition and transparency.

 

“The fans have been unbelievable. They stood by the club even when things looked bleak,” he said. “Now we want to build something sustainable that they can be proud of. The budget is just one part of that—we’re investing in infrastructure, the matchday experience, and the community too.”

 

Though specific numbers were not disclosed, Rothwell’s assurance about the budget indicates Oldham are serious about challenging in League Two, potentially even targeting back-to-back promotions. The club has already been linked with several players as Mellon looks to blend experienced EFL professionals with young talent.

 

“We’ll be smart and responsible,” Rothwell concluded. “But we’re not here to just survive—we’re here to compete.”
