‘World’s greatest stadium’ which was left abandoned for 16 years finally gets opening date as club secure £275m funding.

Stadiums could now be featured in the World Cup. A STADIUM deemed the “world’s greatest” has finally received an opening date after being abandoned for 16 years.
Valencia’s Nou Mestalla is no longer a pipe dream after the Spaniards obtained £275 million in funding to finally complete the construction of their much-anticipated arena.
Valencia has branded the Nou Mestalla, which boasts over 70,000 seats, as a “global benchmark for modern stadium developments.”
It was scheduled to open in time for the 2009/10 LaLiga season, as the club, then a national powerhouse, sought to capitalise on worldwide players such as David Silva, Juan Mata, and David Villa. However, Valencia got into financial difficulties in 2008, amassing enormous debts of £350 million.
The team also failed to find a buyer for its historic Mestalla stadium, which seats 50,000 people and is still used as their home today.
At the time, Valencia’s owners were denied a £90 million bank loan, putting a halt to their stadium plans. It halted construction on the Nou Mestalla, leaving the earth to decay for the previous 16 years.
Valencia has recently announced that they have acquired £275 million in funding, which will allow construction to be completed. The club plans to begin operations at the Nou Mestalla in 2027 and is certain that it will significantly enhance revenue sources, restoring Valencia to their proper place in the LaLiga title battle.
