Sheffield Wednesday woes take ‘scandalous’ turn as Owls hit by double EFL embargo amid staff wages warning
After another violation of the EFL’s rules, the chaos at Sheffield Wednesday has taken an even more startling turn.
Ahead of the 2025–2026 season, Sheffield Wednesday has been the talk of the Championship thus far, albeit for all the wrong reasons.
Due to financial difficulties, Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri was unable to pay players for May, and several Owls employees who weren’t playing had to take out emergency loans in order to survive.
Sheffield Wednesday was given a three-window transfer ban by the EFL as a result of the Owls’ problems, which means the team is unable to pay transfer or loan fees during the current summer transfer window.
The situation has now gotten worse, and Sheffield Wednesday is currently subject to a double EFL embargo.
Following the most recent transgression, Sheffield Wednesday was placed under a double EFL embargo.
The EFL imposed an embargo on Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month due to “Regulation 54.1 – Non-payment to Players,” which resulted in the transfer window penalty.
The Owls’ preseason preparations were thrown into disarray earlier this week when it was revealed that the team’s training facility was not prepared.
With chaos plaguing nearly every department inside the club, Sheffield Wednesday has now been subject to another embargo pertaining to HMRC reporting. This embargo is referred to as “Regulation 17.3 – HMRC reporting” on the Championship embargos section of the EFL website.
Sheffield Wednesday must “settle up with the Owls squad, as well as HMRC, before the embargo is lifted,” according to the Sheffield Star’s report.
Additionally, “non-football staff at Sheffield Wednesday have been given advance warning from the club that the payment of their June wages on Monday is uncertain,” according to Sheffield Star reporter Alex Miller on X.
With more negative news coming in on and off the field every day, it’s really death by a thousand cuts right now. Although I don’t think it’s possible, things can become worse.
“It is scandalous what this club is going through right now.”
The situation at Sheffield Wednesday is nothing short of “scandalous,” and it needs to be handled quickly to protect one of the most recognizable teams in English football as the 2025–26 Championship season draws near.
