Cork City have stated that Rio Shipston will return to Sheffield Wednesday, with an extended loan deemed ‘unworkable’ in the current situation.
The Star reported earlier this week that the 20-year-old would be playing his final game for the Irish club, despite their aspirations of keeping him around for a little longer, and they have now clarified that the Owls’ ban would have made it impossible.
Shipston made 21 appearances for the Rebel Army on his half-season loan, coming on as a second-half replacement in his final game, a 0-0 tie with St. Patrick’s Athletic on Friday evening. His departure was officially revealed today.

Rio Shipston is heading back to Sheffield on Wednesday
“Cork City FC can confirm that Tein Troost and Rio Shipston have departed the club, following the conclusion of their loan spells,” a statement read. “The club had hoped to extend Troost’s tenure on Leeside by activating the option for a permanent transfer, but the player and his representation have indicated that they would want to pursue other alternatives.
“With regard to Rio Shipston, the transfer ban currently in effect at Sheffield Wednesday rendered any potential extension of his loan deal impossible. We congratulate both players for their contributions to the club and wish them well in their future ventures.”
Meanwhile, the midfielder expressed his gratitude on social media, saying, “Thank you Cork City FC, it’s been a pleasure and I wish you all the best moving forward.”
Shipston is likely to join the rest of the Owls squad today as he attempts to force his way into the first team plans for next season, a process made simpler by the club’s restrictions on recruiting new players as a result of the ongoing unpaid wages scandal at Hillsborough. The club also owes money to HMRC.
