Ipswich Town: Mark Ashton on Liam Delap’s departure.

Ipswich Town chairman Mark Ashton says that top scorer Liam Delap was always going to leave the club this summer.
Delap was a breakout star in his first season as a starter in the top flight, scoring 12 goals and leaving a path of battered defenders in his wake.
But it was revealed that he had a £30 million relegation release clause in his contract, and a slew of big teams rushed to sign him once the Blues were relegated to the Championship. He eventually chose Chelsea, and he signed with them on June 4th before heading to America to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup.
In an interview with Jim White and Simon Jordan on talkSPORT, Ashton was questioned if Delap would always depart Town this summer.
Liam Delap was a breakthrough star in the Premier League. “I think the reality is yes,” confessed the Town Manager.
“Simon has run clubs previously; he will grasp this. “When you’re relegated, it doesn’t matter how much money you have; you have FFP criteria to follow, therefore you’ll have to sell some players. “Our recruitment objective was to hire young, hungry, mostly English people who could increase in value.
“And we earned a very substantial profit on Liam in 11 months, but the reality was that a young English striker who had performed so well in the Premier League in his debut season was always going to be in demand.
