OPINION Is something about to give at full-back as Coventry City get proactive in transfer market?

Frank Lampard has quickly addressed Coventry City’s full-back difficulties with the signing of Spaniard Miguel Angel Brau last week and Aston Villa’s Kaine Kelser-Hayden, who completed his move to the CBS Arena on Tuesday.
However, their arrivals raise the question of whether something has to go in terms of one or two existing players leaving to make room for them. In the left-back position, the Sky Blues now have three specialists, with Brau competing against Jay Dasilva and Jake Bidwell.
On the other hand, Kesler-Hayden’s arrival fills a need in City’s roster as Milan van Ewijk was the club’s only recognised right-back last season, with versatile centre-back Joel Latibeaudiere ready to step in.
Most coaches want to have two players for each position, so the possibility of Van Ewijk and Kesler Hayden at Lampard’s disposal is appealing. However, the sought-after Dutchman, who has been linked with renewed interest from Fulham amid summer rumours over Everton and Galatasaray, may be moved.
Another consideration is Kesler-Hayden’s transfer price, which is estimated to be between £3.5 million and £5 million, and a move for Van Ewijk would undoubtedly pay the Villa player’s arrival.
If City were in the Premier League, they might be able to afford the luxury of having two such high-quality acquisitions battling for the same position, and fans will be hoping that is the case in the coming season.
After all, as good as Van Ewijk was last season, his fluctuating form would have benefited from the occasional rest and being pushed by another player who provided fresh legs during games.
Kesler-Hayden, meanwhile, played the majority of Preston’s games during his season-long loan last season and will not be returning to Coventry to sit on the bench.
It will be intriguing to observe how the left-back situation develops.
Lampard was keen to sign Bidwell to a new contract quickly after his appointment, a clear vote of confidence in the steady and dependable defender whose experience is highly valued both in the dressing room and on the pitch.
At that point, it appeared like Dasilva’s future was doomed if City brought in another left-back, but the Welsh international’s strong showing in the second half of the season propelled him ahead of Bidwell in the pecking order and to the forefront of Lampard’s thoughts.
So, will one of those two now be regarded surplus to needs, and will City sell Van Ewijk and hunt for another right-back to compete with Kesler-Hayden?
