Sheffield Wednesday is experiencing a financial problem and has failed to pay some employees yet again. SWFC are gearing up for another year in the Championship.
Windass, 31, has been with the Owls since 2020 and is an important player. Last season, he was their leading league scorer with 13 goals. In the most recent update on his future at Hillsborough, GiveMeSport is one of a few players to advise the club of his decision to leave. He is thought to be garnering interest from other second-tier teams. Windass recently told the Open Goal podcast that “I’ve been there five years now which is obviously a long time but I’ve enjoyed it. I’m the top scorer now for the club this century which is a record I wanted to get… The lads were trying to get me it. I went a few games without a goal and I didn’t think I was going to get it. I scored from a yard out at Watford (in the final game of the season) and I was buzzing.”
He added: “I’ve got another year but we’ll see (what happens).”
Sheffield Wednesday attacker Josh Windass ready to leave.
Sheffield Wednesday would struggle to replace Windass’ goals if he departed. SWFC may square up against him next season if he joins a squad in the same league.
Over the last five years, the Hull native has served the Owls admirably. He has scored 50 goals in 173 matches.

Windass began his time with the South Yorkshire club on a loan basis, which was later extended. He assisted them in their promotion from League One under the leadership of Darren Moore. His previous clubs include Huddersfield Town, Harrogate Railway Athletic, Accrington Stanley, Rangers, and Wigan Athletic. He scored nine goals in 55 appearances with the latter before joining his current team.
What now for Josh Windass at Sheffield Wednesday?
Sheffield Wednesday are in a shambles and face an uncertain future. SWFC risks losing their most valuable assets, such as Windass. At this point, it’s unclear who else is interested in him. The Owls finished 12th in the previous season and were comfortably mid-table by the end. Danny Rohl was named their head coach in October 2023. Despite the odds, he kept them up in his first year, but he is also about to leave.
