Oldham Athletic sign former Tranmere midfielder Josh Hawkes

FORMER Josh Hawkes, a Tranmere midfielder, has joined Oldham Athletic on a two-year agreement.

The 26-year-old joins Boundary Park after leaving Tranmere Rovers this summer.

Micky Mellon, the former Rovers manager, has encouraged him to play a significant role in the club’s “big plans” after promotion back to the Football League.

Hawkes is prepared to live up to those expectations.

“Boundary Park has a great atmosphere and a real ambition to climb the leagues, which was a huge factor in me signing,” he told ESPN.

“I want to bring energy, creativity and goals from out wide, and help the team push up the table and match the ambitions the coaching staff have.”

Mellon added: “Josh is exactly the type of player we’ve been looking for: someone with a goal threat, creativity, and a good understanding of the level.

“He’s entering his peak, and I’m convinced he’ll improve our midfield and bring the spectators out of their seats.

“We’re building something here and have plenty of ambitious ideas, and we believe Josh will play a key role in that.

After graduating from Hartlepool United’s academy, Hawkes made his debut appearance in the first team during the 2016–17 season.

Over the course of four seasons, he made 61 league games and scored 12 goals.

Before joining Tranmere in January 2022, he inked a two-year contract with Sunderland in September 2020. He made 134 appearances and scored 26 goals during his three-and-a-half seasons at Preston Park.
