TRANMERE ROVERS FC Oldham Athletic sign former Tranmere midfielder Josh Hawkes

FORMER Tranmere midfielder Josh Hawkes has become the latest addition for Oldham Athletic, signing a two-year deal.

The 26-year-old arrives at Boundary Park after leaving Tranmere Rovers this summer.

Ex-Rovers manager Micky Mellon has backed him to play a key role in the “big plans” he says he has for the club following promotion back to the Football League.

And Hawkes is ready to live up to those expectations.

“Boundary Park has a great atmosphere and a real ambition to climb the leagues, which was a huge factor in me signing,” he said.

“I want to bring energy, creativity and goals from out wide, and help the team push up the table and match the ambitions the coaching staff have.”

Mellon added: “Josh is exactly the sort of player we’ve been targeting, someone with goal threat, creativity and knows the level well.

“He’s entered his prime, and I’m confident he’ll add real quality to our midfield and get the fans out of their seats.

“We’re building something here and have lots of big plans and we feel that Josh will play a big part in that.”

Hawkes came through Hartlepool United’s academy and broke into the first team during the 2016–17 campaign, going on to make 61 league appearances and score 12 goals over four seasons.

He signed a two-year deal with Sunderland in September 2020 before joining Tranmere in January 2022.

Across three-and-a-half seasons at Preston Park he made 134 appearances and scored 26 goals.
