Brazilian forward Joao Pedro has opened up about his reasons for rejecting a potential move to Newcastle United in favour of signing with Chelsea. The striker, who had been on Newcastle’s radar for some time, made the switch to Stamford Bridge for a reported £55 million fee, with additional clauses to follow based on performance.
Pedro’s move comes as Chelsea continue to revamp their squad under a long-term vision. The 22-year-old has penned a deal that will keep him at the London club until 2033, and he will link up with the squad in the United States for their FIFA Club World Cup campaign, which begins with a quarter-final clash against Palmeiras.

Trophies and Ambition Behind Chelsea Choice
Discussing the move, Pedro revealed that Chelsea’s history of success and silverware was a significant factor in his decision. He grew up admiring the Premier League and identified Chelsea as a club synonymous with winning.
“I grew up watching the Premier League, and Chelsea were a club that won trophies,” Pedro explained. “So, when you join Chelsea, you can only think one thing: to win trophies. Every competition, you have to think, ‘I play for Chelsea and that is my ambition.’”
Pedro also expressed excitement about joining a club with such a deep tradition and talented roster. “Everyone knows this is a big club with a great history,” he said. “They had brilliant players in the past and have brilliant players now. So I am excited to join and you know when you are a Chelsea player you must think one thing — win.”
David Luiz Offers Guidance
Pedro also shared that he received support and career advice from former Chelsea and Brazil international defender David Luiz. While the conversation wasn’t directly about the Chelsea transfer, Luiz’s mentorship played a role in Pedro’s professional mindset.
“I’m close a little bit to David Luiz,” Pedro noted. “I spoke to him, not about Chelsea, but about my career and how I could develop better. He helped me.”
