Frank Lampard must use his Chelsea connection to ensure Coventry City beat Ipswich Town to striker.

Coventry City have made a good start to the window, with Miguel Angel Brau and Kaine Kesler-Hayden already in.

Frank Lampard’s arrival produced a remarkable turnaround last season, with the Sky Blues reaching the play-offs before losing heartbreakingly to Sunderland in the semi-finals, so extensive surgery isn’t required this time around.

However, this does not mean that there are no issues that must be solved, and Lampard should make bringing in a striker his first priority.

Coventry City lacked a clinical striker during 2024/25 promotion push

With Ellis Simms, Haji Wright, Brandon Thomas-Asante, and Norman Bassette already on the roster, it may seem unusual to imply that a striker is required.

However, Wright was the only player to reach double figures last season, and the USA international can be irritating at times, even though he has talent.

Coventry City Top Championship Scorers 24/25
Player Goals
Haji Wright 12
Jack Rudoni 9
Victor Torp 6
Ellis Simms 6
Ephron Mason-Clark 5
Bobby Thomas 5

Lampard’s reluctance to use Simms during the play-off semi-final spoke volumes, whilst Thomas-Asante hasn’t convinced and Bassette is still young and learning.

So, whilst it’s not a case of going out and signing anyone, if a clear upgrade becomes available, it’s something that Coventry should pursue.

Frank Lampard must strive to recruit Marc Guiu to Coventry City instead of Ipswich Town.

And it’s safe to say that Chelsea striker Marc Guiu would fall into that group, as the 19-year-old is thought to be a target for Ipswich Town.

The Spain youth international scored on his Barcelona debut, has scored in the Champions League for the Catalan giants, and has six goals in nine games for Chelsea, who won the Conference League.

That demonstrates Guiu’s background, and anyone who has seen him play will appreciate his talent. He is a traditional striker in that he looks to play on the last guy, runs in behind, and has an excellent ability to create space in the box.

You can see why Ipswich wants Guiu, and there is hope that he will thrive in a team that will create opportunities and aim to dominate the Championship. But Coventry has the same goals.

Following that play-off near-miss, the goal will be to earn promotion, and Lampard has developed a club that plays stylish, attacking football.

Normally, Coventry would struggle to sign a player ahead of Ipswich, given the Tractor Boys’ better resources following their experience in the Premier League last season. Coventry, on the other hand, may benefit from Lampard’s presence.

Of course, the Londoners aren’t just going to do him a favour because he’s a club legend, but Lampard’s connections at Stamford Bridge will definitely assist.

Furthermore, he can point to the likes of Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount, whom he groomed while in charge of Derby, with the two going on to earn large prices for Chelsea later in their careers, while Mount helped them win the Champions League.

Now it’s up to Lampard to try to exploit that link to Coventry’s advantage, and bringing Guiu to the CBS Arena would be a statement signing – and might potentially help them go one further in their promotion bid this season.
