Sheffield Wednesday’s troubles deepen as six players request moves and unpaid transfers are exposed

According to Mike McGrath of The Telegraph, six Owls players have expressed their desire to leave the club following the latest round of late wages.

Additionally, the club is owed money by two Championship clubs

As reported by the Sheffield Star, if players were not paid on schedule for June, and only some received compensation for May, they have the option of tendering a notice period.

FIFA rules allow players to serve a 15-day notice period after two late payments, as has been the situation with the Owls squad. Some players have yet to be paid for May and June, with the Sheffield newspaper reporting that “several players” planned to submit letters of notice.

According to the Telegraph, six players have started the process of leaving Hillsborough, but their identities are unknown.

Sheffield Wednesday missed payments for two recruits.

To add to the anguish, the national newspaper reported that two Owls players had skipped payments relating to their transfers.

Norwich City are believed to be owed money for centre-back Akin Famewo after missing another payment deadline last month. The 26-year-old joined Wednesday in 2022 and will see his contract expire this summer after 73 appearances, with the club still due portions of the original deal.

The other issue concerns Shea Charles. The Southampton midfielder spent the 2024/25 season on loan in Pittsburgh, where he played 43 league games for Danny Rohl’s squad.

According to reports, the 21-year-old Manchester City academy product’s loan fee and wage from last season have yet to be paid, despite returning to his parent club this summer. Charles scored six goals from a deep central-midfield position during his season-long time at Wednesday, but his excellent spell has now ended on a low note.

News of a takeover has cooled down in recent days, with the looming issue of two concurrent EFL embargoes hanging over the club while Dejphon Chansiri remains chairman.

Rohl, a highly regarded German coach, is set to leave the Owls before the start of the new season, while no pre-season friendlies have been announced, and training has begun in a shambles due to Wednesday’s training ground not yet being ready for use after improvement work ran over schedule.

It is a catastrophic scenario at one of the country’s most historic football clubs. And the revelation of half a dozen players giving their notice periods, combined with the delayed payments of two signings, simply adds gasoline to the already raging fire.
