Sheffield United star wants Premier League move amid European interest

Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer is reportedly keen on a move back to the Premier League this summer amid interest from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, according to a repor.

The 26-year-old playmaker was one of the standout performers for the Blades last season despite their failure to bounce back to the top flight. Hamer’s creativity and technical quality have kept him firmly on the radar of top-flight clubs both in England and abroad, and it now seems the Brazilian-born Dutchman is eager to test himself at the highest level once again.

Hamer’s desire to return to the Premier League is hardly a surprise. He played in the division with Sheffield United during the 2023/24 campaign after joining from Coventry City and impressed in flashes despite the team’s struggles. With the Blades now preparing for a second consecutive season in the Championship following their failure to secure promotion, Hamer is believed to be eyeing a move that would allow him to continue playing at the highest level.

According to  PSV Eindhoven are keen to bring the Dutchman back to the Eredivisie. However, Hamer is said to prefer a move within England, ideally remaining in the Premier League, which he sees as the ideal platform to further his career and push for a potential national team call-up.

The news poses a fresh challenge for new Blades boss Ruben Selles, who faces a summer of uncertainty as he tries to reshape a squad that appears set to be picked apart. Several key players could depart Bramall Lane in the coming weeks, and Hamer is among the most high-profile names linked with a move away.

Selles, appointed following Chris Wilder’s departure, is tasked with leading a rebuild that will allow Sheffield United to mount another serious promotion push. But losing Hamer, arguably the club’s most influential midfielder, would be a major setback. The 2024/25 campaign saw him register five goals and nine assists in the Championship – a testament to his consistent impact in the middle of the park.

With Hamer entering the final 12 months of his contract, Sheffield United could be forced into a sale to avoid losing him for free next summer. While PSV have made their interest clear, the club will likely wait to see if Premier League sides firm up their long-standing admiration with formal offers.

Clubs such as Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, and even newly promoted Southampton have previously tracked the midfielder, and could revisit their interest as the transfer window progresses.

For now, the Blades are hoping to retain as much of their core as possible, but Hamer’s situation underlines the challenge they face. With players like Anel Ahmedhodžić, Oli McBurnie, and others also being watched closely, Bramall Lane could witness significant turnover before the new season begins.
