Behind Josh Coburn’s Middlesbrough-Millwall Move: The Kieran Scott Discussion
Josh Coburn discussed his departure from Middlesbrough with BBC Tees.
Josh Coburn, who completed his transfer to Millwall last week, stated that his desire to play regular football the next season was the primary reason for leaving Middlesbrough.
Following a solid conclusion to his loan stint at the Den last term, the academy product was anticipated to return to Boro this summer.
The well-liked Richmond striker appeared to have a decent chance to compete for a regular role in the Boro team now that Rob Edwards was the new manager.
Rather, on the day when Boro’s players returned for preseason, Coburn finalized his permanent return to Millwall.
After Boro negotiated a deal worth more than £5 million to sell, the 22-year-old acknowledges that a talk with head of football Kieran Scott prior to Edwards’ arrival convinced Coburn that the Millwall transfer was his best option.
“I’ve been at the club for seven years of my life, which is a long time,” Coburn told BBC Tees. It’s the academy where I grew up. I simply believe that [moving on] was the right decision for me.
At the end of the previous season, I played a lot of football [at Millwall] and developed an interest in it.
With me, Middlesbrough has been excellent. “I’ve played a lot now, and I know I can play in the Championship,” I told Kieran when we spoke. I must take advantage of this chance.
With the new management taking over and not knowing what would happen, he was unable to guarantee me that.
After that, it was truly up to me to decide. Kieran stated that although the club would prefer that I stay, they wouldn’t stop me if I chose to leave.
However, I simply thought that this was the ideal moment to jump and see what happens.
Rob Edwards was supposed to give Coburn a chance at Boro this summer. Many believed that Coburn was a good fit for the Luton Town setup, even though the new Boro head coach had new ideas about how to maximize the performance of the current Boro team.
Therefore, was he not inclined to postpone the move and see the outcome?
“I had been in and out of the team at Middlesbrough and never really had that real run at it,” Coburn remarked.
Naturally, a new manager was taking over [and maybe an opportunity to make an impression], but since I was still young and ready to play every single week, I wanted to just seize the moment.
It seemed like the perfect moment to accomplish it, and I had a great experience here the previous season.
