After Huddersfield Town began negotiations with Preston North End over a trade for defender Jack Whatmough, a former Portsmouth defender may be getting close to joining League One.
Before making his senior debut in November 2013 in a 2-1 loss to then-League Two opponents Southend United, the centre-back progressed through Pompey’s academy system.
Whatmough played 120 games for the squad before leaving in the wake of the 2017 League Two championship victory, and he went on to make 12 first-team appearances over the rest of that season.
After securing a free transfer to Wigan Athletic, the defender did make the leap into League One. He had a significant influence, winning Latics Player of the Season in his first season with the team as they were crowned third-tier champions.
He left Wigan in the summer of 2023 due to a contract dispute, and he has played for Preston in the Championship for the past two seasons. However, it looks like he may join Huddersfield as the Terriers try to bolster their defensive options in the summer transfer window.
