Sunderland seem to be aiming high in the transfer market!

“When the window closes, I’m confident in saying we’ll never have seen spending like it, and I don’t mean in a ‘break the bank’ sort of way, either” , Paddy Hollis says in the Guardian. The past week or so has felt like a pinnacle for Sunderland.
In that time, we’ve finalised the signings of two new players, nearly completed the signing of another, appointed a new Director of Football, and are preparing to hire a new assistant coach who formerly worked at AC Milan.
Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki have both signed contracts for over £46 million, and they will be joined shortly by defender Reinildo Mandava, who has left Atlético Madrid.
Our spending is far from complete, and with the rumours still flying and two months of the transfer window remaining, it’ll be a lot of fun.
When the window shuts, I’m convinced that we’ll never have witnessed such spending, and I don’t mean in a ‘break the bank’ way.
We’ll do so by implementing our recruitment policy, which has been fine-tuned since our promotion to the Premier League, to acquire players we believe can strengthen the squad and maintain us in the top level.

We’ve shattered our transfer record twice this summer, and I believe we’ll do it again before September. We’re not used to spending enormous sums of money, but as a Kristjaan Speakman supporter, I can (basically) understand the goal. Throughout the various windows of looking light on experience and investing money, the club hierarchy was developing a youth-focused approach to promotion. The irritation of not spending millions of pounds on players came to a head at times, but our conservative mindset and faith in the assets we created internally paid off.
Around half a dozen Premier League players began their careers with the club in League One, the majority of them were youngsters. The club has long trusted them and others, and their painstaking approach to constructing a team capable of returning to the promised land has paid off.
It means that after nearly five years under Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ ownership, we’ve been able to increase our recruitment and spending levels.
A hectic summer has only just begun, and there is already a level of excitement rarely seen on Wearside.

Things are going swiftly on multiple fronts, and our first pre-season friendly is only a week away. The summer has passed in a flash, and it only seems like two minutes since Tommy Watson tucked the ball into the bottom corner of the Wembley net.
There will be plenty more incomings and outgoings before the conclusion of the window, as well as a lot more money spent, but unlike previous Premier League campaigns, it appears that we are doing things with a strategy in place and from a position of ‘we won’t be messed around’.
Sunderland AFC is being operated like a well-oiled football machine for the first time in years, which is excellent!
