Southampton are close to wrapping up a deal for FC Koln star Damion Downs, according to reports – with a medical booked in for early next week as the Saints look to get their squad in shape for next season’s Championship campaign.

 

Saints were relegated from the Premier League last season under two managers in Russell Martin and Ivan Juric with just 12 points, the second-worst campaign of all-time, beating only Derby County’s 11-point haul back in 2007/08. But regardless of their poor campaign, new boss Will Still will try to forget their past to lead them back to the promised land.

The report by Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg states that Downs is expected to undergo a medical at Southampton on Tuesday, with a deal being ‘all done and sealed’.

 

Koln, who have recently been promoted to the Bundesliga, will receive a guaranteed €8million (£6.8million), along with potential bonuses of €2million (£1.7million), with a contract running until 2029.

 

The 21-year-old star is an ‘absolute key target’ for the Saints, with gaffer Still managing to get a deal for his top target over the line – and although he is currently preparing for the Gold Cup final against Mexico, that will be followed by a medical for the ‘cheat code’ striker.

 

Downs, born in Germany, moved to America when he was one-year-old, before moving back to Germany and starting a football career.

 

Joining Koln when he was 16, he rose to the first-team and made his debut in September 2023 – where he’s been in fine form ever since, scoring two Bundesliga goals in a spate of appearances in their relegation campaign before dragging them up to the Bundesliga as champions with 10 goals to his name.
