Leeds Rhinos back rower talks ‘confidence boost’ after England call-up and reveals Shaun Wane chat

Leeds Rhinos second rower, Morgan Gannon, has said that England boss Shaun Wane ‘had to call him twice’ when giving him the news about his international call up.

On Monday, Wane revealed a preliminary 32-man roster, with Gannon among six players called up for the first time. He expressed his happiness at being chosen, even though the decision came as a complete surprise to him.

It’s extremely fantastic,” Gannon told BBC Radio Leeds. “It’s rather unexpected given that I had last year off. I was just concentrated on getting my form back for Leeds when Shaun called, but I’m pleased to be selected in this group.” The 21-year-old described how he received the phone call and nearly missed it entirely. He stated, “I was at home, but I had my phone set to do not disturb, so I think he had to call me twice for it to come through.” I accepted the call in the living room and informed my mother and father.”

Gannon said, “He [Shaun Wane] liked the way I’ve been playing this year. I was only thanking him for the opportunity and for noticing me. It was only a quick phone call, but it was memorable.”

Leeds Rhinos man taking huge confidence boost from England call-up

There will be a lot of work required for any player to participate in the series, but the Siddal amateur is grateful to have been spotted by the greatest in the game. He said: “It’s a huge confidence boost to know that not only your colleagues and people around you at Leeds respect what you’re doing, but also those on the outside looking in. It’s a fantastic confidence boost, but it’s also motivation to keep pushing and improving so that I can deserve the jersey at the end of the year.”

Gannon is one of six Leeds Rhinos players named to the first squad, with second row partner James McDonnell also making his debut. He claimed that Wane met with the Rhinos contingent and that the England coach set his goals for them for the rest of the season. “He has expressed his expectations and desired outcomes. He wants people to watch a game and be able to identify England players, and you stand out for your effort and attitude.”
