Deon Cross, a centre for SAINTS, is the most recent member of the team’s three-quarter roster to miss time due to injury.
Due to a foot ligament issue, Cross, who has adapted well since joining from the struggling Salford Red Devils in early May, was unable to play in yesterday’s 13–6 victory over Hull FC.
Packmen James Bell and Joe Batchelor are also presently out, and he is in rehab alongside fellow backs Jack Welsby, Lewis Murphy, and Mark Percival.
According to Wellens, “Deon suffered a minor injury to his foot last week that did not initially appear to be very serious.”
“We had it looked into, and according to the technical word, he suffered a Lisfranc injury. In essence, it is a foot ligament injury that will likely cause a three- to four-week absence.
“He has performed incredibly well since coming to the club, so that is a blow.
“To the players’ credit, Matt Whitley performed admirably when he moved into the Centres, which is not his natural position.
“The other guys in rehab, including Deon, will be frustrated because they all want to be on the field helping their teammates, but they are all working extremely hard to get back on the field.”
Wellens provided an approximate timeline for some medium-term casualties last Thursday, stating that Percival would be back in a week or two following surgery on a bone spur in his ankle/foot.
“We’re hoping that Mark Percival will be next week or the week after, and Joe Batchelor shortly after,” Wellens clarified. James Bell may be a few weeks away, but everyone else is only a few weeks away.
Therefore, two, possibly three, or four of them may return to full training in the coming weeks.
“And then, of course, determining their physical condition in order to rejoin the squad.”
