Charlton Athletic, Nathan Jones plot third Luton Town transfer raid with defender pursuit

Nathan Jones and Charlton Athletic plan the third Luton Town transfer raid while pursuing defenders.

  • According to journalist Richard Cawley, Burke, who played just 17 Championship games for Luton last season due in part to a quad injury that kept him out of action for more than three months, is being courted by the Addicks for a deal with the recently relegated League One team.

Sonny Carey and Tanto Olaofe, two of the best League One players from the previous season, have already been signed by Nathan Jones’ team as they get ready for their debut season back in the Championship following five years in the third division.

However, in addition to those two, Charlton has been shopping at Jones’ old team, and Burke might be the third Luton player to join the Valley after Amari’i Bell and Thomas Kaminski did so this summer.

According to a Cawley report, Charlton Athletic has expressed interest in acquiring defender Reece Burke from Luton Town.

In 2021, Nathan Jones brought the 28-year-old from Hull City to Luton, where he has played for four seasons. He has experienced two play-off campaigns, one promotion, and two relegations during his time at Luton.
Although he has only played more than 25 league games once in his four years at Luton due to a number of ailments, he has been a key member of the Hatters’ backline when healthy.

Reece Burke’s league appearances since his Luton Town arrival, per Transfermarkt
Season Appearances Starts
2021/22 27 25
2022/23 20 15
2023/24 22 20
2024/25 17 10

It is thought that if he can regain his fitness for an entire season, he will be a vital member of the Charlton defence as they attempt to survive in their first season back in the division. His per-90-minute statistics in the Championship last season put him in the top 20% of second-tier center-backs in tackles won, interceptions, and blocks. Had Charlton been able to sign Reece Burke this summer, the Addicks would have acquired three players from Luton Town’s 2024–2025 roster.

Both Amari’i Bell and Thomas Kaminski have already moved to the Valley; Nathan Jones had already signed Bell while the Welsh manager was in the dugout at Kenilworth Road. Bringing in players that Jones has previously worked with at Luton is also nothing new at Charlton; since taking over in February 2024, Jones has introduced players like Greg Docherty, Allan Campbell, Dan Potts, Luke Berry, and Danny Hylton to the team.

Charlton supporters will be hoping that after a return to the Championship, they can experience the same level of success under Jones, with his former Luton players in the squad. Jones had a great time at Luton Town, leading the team from League Two all the way to the Championship play-offs and laying the groundwork for the team that would eventually be promoted to the Premier League in 2023.
