‘All the pieces are falling into place’ – it’s Sunderland 3.0.

Sunderland 3.0 appears to be thoughtful parts of the puzzle coming together in preparation for the ultimate challenge.
In a recent Ha’way the Podcast, Gav, Jonny, and Bomber remarked on ‘all the pieces fitting into place’ as Sunderland make their imprint in the summer transfer market — I couldn’t agree more — and it got me thinking about the journey since Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ arrival.
We are witnessing the development of Sunderland 3.0 in the Louis-Dreyfus era. KLD arrived in February 2021, and while Kristjaan Speakman was hired in late 2020, it is usually assumed that he was a Louis-Dreyfus employee.
So started Sunderland 1.0 under the duo, a period that saw the emergence of the’model’ with the addition of quality young players, the hiring of Alex Neil and subsequently Tony Mowbray, and promotion from League One in May 2022.
SAFC 1.0, however, was not without flaws, most notably the Black Cats Bar incident, as well as problems between the duo and two popular head coaches, which resulted in Michael Beale’s departure. However, progress was made, albeit not in a straight line.

Clearly, lessons were learnt from the rough 2023/4 season. Out of the ashes emerged 2.0, defined by the entry of Regis Le Bris and the intensity of the model, with more new recruits and academy graduates breaking through.
Long-term investments were also made at the Stadium of Light, including the pitch and sound system. In 2024/5, SAFC 2.0 outperformed expectations with a thrilling yet nerve-racking promotion to the Premier League. Enter Sunderland 3.0, the Premiership era.
Florent Ghisolfi and Luciano Vulcano have recently joined Speakman and Le Bris on the management/recruitment team, making significant additions.
The concept was at work with the sales of Tommy Watson and Jobe Bellingham, putting us in first place in the transfer market. We are now adding up to seven great players to the roster while keeping our own personality.
Seven-figure sums are being spent on the Academy of Light and additional Stadium of Light renovations.
What is Sunderland 3.0? 3.0 appears to be thoughtful puzzle pieces sliding into place in preparation for the supreme challenge.
