Ex-Sunderland man signs new five-year Premier League deal amid £70m valuation and Newcastle United interest

Antoine Semenyo has extended his stay at Bournemouth, following interest from Liverpool, Newcastle United, Spurs, and Manchester United.

Antoine Semenyo, a former Sunderland loanee, has signed a new five-year contract with Bournemouth, pledging his long-term future to the club despite strong Premier League interest.

The 25-year-old, who had a brief loan spell at the Stadium of Light during the 2019-20 season, was reportedly pursued by Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Liverpool after an excellent season on the south coast.

Semenyo scored 13 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions as Bournemouth set a club record for Premier League points and equaled their highest-ever finish of ninth place. Despite heavy interest, with Spurs reportedly stepping up their pursuit earlier this month and Liverpool also naming him as an attacking target, Semenyo has decided to stay at the Vitality Stadium, where he is currently under contract until 2030.

“I’ve grown so much at the club, both on and off the pitch, and I’m really happy to have signed ahead of returning for pre-season,” Semenyo told reporters. “It’s a great place to be and I’m excited to get back to Bournemouth and continue the hard work with the new season just around the corner.”

The Ghana international, who joined Bournemouth from Bristol City in January 2023, is thought to be worth £70 million to the club. He has subsequently made 89 appearances for the Cherries, scoring 22 goals. Semenyo’s quick rise has not gone unnoticed in the Premier League, with Newcastle United reportedly interested in the versatile forward. However, Bournemouth made it obvious that he was not for sale.

Bournemouth’s president of football operations, Tiago Pinto, said: “Antoine has been critical to the club’s growth and is an important part of the project here at Vitality Stadium. His dedication to the club matches our goals, and I’m anxious to see what we can accomplish as we prepare for the upcoming season.”

Semenyo made two appearances for Sunderland during a brief loan spell in early 2020, while still a youngster at Bristol City. Though he made a little impact on Wearside, his subsequent career trajectory has highlighted his developing Premier League reputation.

Who is Antoine Semenyo? Born in London, Semenyo began his professional career at Bristol City before joining Wearside in January 2020 as a raw 19-year-old potential. Sunderland, then led by Phil Parkinson, signed Semenyo on loan to improve their offensive options in League One.

His stay at the Stadium of Lights was short. He appeared in just seven games, primarily from the bench, and did not score, with his single start coming in a 2-0 loss away to Bristol Rovers. The season was eventually cut short owing to the COVID-19 epidemic, thus Semenyo returned to Bristol City with little fanfare.
