Sheffield Wednesday plans revealed but one big question remains unanswered

Sheffield Wednesday have disclosed the next phase of their preseason plans, but one major question remains unresolved.

Wednesday are currently in difficulty, with unpaid pay prompting players to put in their notices, numerous non-playing staff at the club still owing money, and the club is currently embargoed for three distinct breaches of English Football League regulations. A three-window fee restriction is currently in place.

Despite this, people are working hard behind the scenes to prepare for the 2025/26 season, and players have recently returned for the start of preseason, despite the fact that the training pitches at Middlewood Road are not yet ready for use.

The Jubilee, home of the SWFC Community Project, has been used, and The Star has already reported that they will be moving to the cutting-edge St. George’s Park this week. The club has officially confirmed this, as well as the desire to play friendly games ‘behind closed doors’ when they return from Burton upon Trent.

Sheffield Wednesday will play their friendly behind closed doors

“The Owls squad are set to head to St George’s Park on Monday for a week-long pre-season camp,” they told me this evening. “Our first-team squad returned to S6 in late June for the first round of training and pre-season testing ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The previous week has seen an emphasis on fitness and conditioning in smaller groups inside the club’s training complex, as well as targeted individual programming away from S6. The intensity will rise tomorrow as the players travel to St George’s Park for a six-day training camp.

The announcement went on to say, “With the significant renovations at Middlewood Road expected to be completed shortly thereafter, the squad will return to base to continue their 2025/26 preparations.” A handful of behind-closed-doors games are set to follow our St George’s Park training camp as part of those preparations.

However, there has been no information on who will be training. As things stand, Andy Holdsworth is anticipated to be the U21 manager, given that Danny Röhl, who is contracted, has yet to return to the club, and the rest of his technical team are out of contract.
