Wigan Athletic’s Kai Payne Set for Oldham Athletic Return

Oldham Athletic are closing in on the return of highly-rated Wigan Athletic midfielder Kai Payne, with a season-long loan deal understood to be in the final stages of completion.

The 20-year-old became a firm favourite at Boundary Park during a successful temporary stint last season, impressing fans and coaching staff alike with his work ethic, technical ability, and mature performances well beyond his years. Now, with Payne keen on regular first-team football and Oldham eager to build on last season’s momentum, a reunion is imminent.

Talks between Wigan and Oldham have progressed smoothly over recent weeks, with Latics boss Micky Mellon a driving force behind the move. Mellon, who worked closely with Payne during his time at the club, has been vocal in his admiration for the young midfielder and sees him as a key component of Oldham’s push for promotion from the National League.

“Kai was excellent for us last season,” Mellon said in a recent interview. “He gave us energy, control in midfield, and that extra bit of quality in tight games. To have him back in the building would be a massive boost—not just for the team, but for the whole club.”

Payne made 22 appearances during his previous loan spell, scoring three goals and assisting five more. His ability to link defence and attack, along with his tireless running and eye for a pass, made him one of the standout performers in Oldham’s midfield last term.

Wigan Athletic are said to be happy with the arrangement, viewing the loan as an ideal opportunity for Payne to continue his development in a competitive environment. With first-team opportunities limited at the DW Stadium, the League One side believe regular game time under a trusted manager like Mellon will be vital for the youngster’s progression.

Oldham fans, meanwhile, have taken to social media to express their excitement at the potential return. Many believe Payne’s presence could be the final piece in the puzzle as the club looks to mount a serious challenge for promotion back to the Football League.

One fan tweeted: “Kai Payne coming back is massive. Proper baller and fits the way we play. Can’t wait to see him back in a Latics shirt.”

Although no official announcement has been made, sources close to both clubs expect confirmation in the coming days, with Payne likely to link up with Oldham’s squad before their next pre-season fixture.

With pre-season now in full swing and the new campaign on the horizon, Oldham’s proactive transfer business continues to build optimism. The return of a player as influential as Kai Payne could prove to be one of their most significant moves of the summer.
