John Swift ‘Excited’ by Next Club as He Takes Opportunity After West Brom Exit
John Swift has broken his silence following his departure from West Bromwich Albion, expressing excitement about the next chapter of his career as he prepares to embrace a fresh challenge this summer.
The 29-year-old attacking midfielder was released by the Baggies at the end of the 2024/25 season, bringing an end to his three-year spell at The Hawthorns. Swift was one of three senior players let go by the club, alongside centre-back Semi Ajayi and winger Grady Diangana, as West Brom look to reshape their squad under new leadership.
Swift, who joined West Brom from Reading in 2022, made over 90 appearances for the club and was a regular figure in their promotion pushes in the Championship. Though plagued by occasional injuries and inconsistent form, his technical ability, vision, and dead-ball quality earned him praise from fans and coaches alike.
Now a free agent, Swift says he is energised by the opportunity to start anew. “I’m really excited about what’s next,” he told reporters. “Leaving West Brom was emotional, of course — it’s a great club with great people, and I’ve made some lasting friendships. But I’m also ready for a new challenge and I feel I’ve still got a lot to give.”
Sources close to the player suggest he has held talks with multiple Championship and League One clubs, both in England and abroad. A move to a top-tier club in the Netherlands or Belgium has also been mooted, with his playing style reportedly attracting interest from clubs with a possession-based philosophy.
“Sometimes when one door closes, another one opens — and I’m treating this as a big opportunity,” Swift added. “I’ve kept myself in top shape over the summer and had good conversations with clubs that are ambitious and align with the way I like to play.”
Swift’s departure from West Brom came as part of a broader squad overhaul. With the club narrowly missing out on promotion via the play-offs, Baggies bosses decided to release experienced names to make room for new additions and younger talent. While some supporters questioned the decision to let go of such seasoned figures, others acknowledged it as a necessary move to evolve the squad.
Reflecting on his time in the Midlands, Swift had nothing but gratitude: “The fans were always brilliant with me, and I’ll never forget the big nights under the lights at The Hawthorns. I gave everything I had in a West Brom shirt, and I wish the club all the best going forward.”
Swift is expected to make a decision on his future in the coming weeks, with pre-season already underway for most clubs across Europe. Given his experience, creative spark, and free-agent status, he’s likely to be one of the more in-demand names in the summer market.
Wherever he ends up, Swift insists he’s ready: “I’m hungry. I want to be somewhere I’m valued, where I can play my best football and contribute to something exciting.”
