A tribute: Gordon Jago 1932-2025

IT WAS with great sadness that we learned at the weekend of the passing of Gordon Jago at the age of 92.

Gordon is one of the most respected figures in the club’s history. He joined QPR as a coach at a tough time for the club at the end of the 1969/70 season, a campaign that promised much but ended with a winless run of eight games.

This was our first season back in the second tier following relegation with a record low points total in the 1968/69 season (our first ever top-flight season).

He joined the club to help player/manager Les Allen. Allen – a star of our 1966/67 Third Division/League Cup double-winning side – resigned as boss in January 1971.

Gordon took over on a caretaker basis for an initial period of two weeks. Following an excellent run of results, he signed a three-year contract to become our permanent manager at the end of the 1970/71 season.

Gordon had previously coached in the United States in the late 1960s and he was inspired by the way that they marketed the game, he was the brains behind the annual open days at our Ruislip training ground. Fans still talk fondly of the access they had to the players and how friendly and engaging Gordon was.
