What I learned on my first day back at Calmont Road

PICKING the hottest day of the year to return to Millwall’s training ground for the first time in two months was not the most sensible decision I have made in my ten or so months covering the Lions (spare a thought for the players running around in that heat).

After an hour and a half sweltering on public transport last Tuesday (getting to Calmont Road requires me to take four trains), I arrived and was immediately struck by how much had changed.

Gone were the diggers and piles of dirt fenced off by cones; in their place was a sleek new section for the players, which includes cryotherapy and a hot and cold plunge, and from my vantage point in the office I was waiting in, a sheltered balcony to look out at the revamped pitches.

Clearly, money is being invested heavily off the pitch as wel.
